Get Ready For The Festival Fringe
In just a couple of weeks time, the city comes alive as thousands of performers and spectators congregate in the streets of Edinburgh for the Annual Festival Fringe, an important fixture on our calendars since 1947. This is obviously good news for our City Fathers keeping a tight reign on the purse strings, as nearly three million tickets were issued during 2018, bringing huge revenue into the city, creating jobs in the process. It cannot be underestimated what this means for Edinburgh’s economy, as tourists and locals mingle at what is quite simply regarded as the greatest arts festival in the world.
Your Airbnb property is priceless this summer
It’s also the time of year when holiday let management owners lick their lips in anticipation, as block bookings are pretty much guaranteed. Whether you’ve a townhouse, Victorian flat or maybe even just a spare room, provided you’re property is in good habitable order, and you’re ready to rent it out, guests will be desperate to book, given hotel accommodation and prices are at a premium. Not only that, but your extensive local knowledge is bound to help them make the most of their time in our capital city.
What can guests expect from the Festival Fringe in 2019?
It’s not always commonly appreciated, but The Fringe is an open access festival. What is performed and how it’s displayed, is left entirely to each Fringe group, which at times has meant that boundaries have been breached. But the whole point of the Festival is freedom of speech and the artistic licence of performance. It wouldn’t be the Fringe if we didn’t see colourful jugglers, fire-eaters and one trick ponies trying to grab your attention on The Royal Mile, and some loose change in the process. The Fringe runs from 2-26 August, and is expected to attract millions of curious onlookers, looking to make the Festival experience a massive part of their holiday. Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows catering for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.
There are more than 3,500 shows on offer at this year’s Fringe, so we understand that compiling your schedule can feel a bit daunting. To help, there are several different ways to choose and book tickets ahead of time – leaving you free to soak in the festival atmosphere once you arrive. It’s also right to point out that all events are accessible for those with disabilities and their carers.
Elite’s top five picks from this year’s Fringe programme
Given the wide array of talent and the breadth and depth of performance art, this wasn’t a particularly easy task, but the team believes that whatever your taste you’ll find the following shows and events unmissable.
Cabaret and Variety - Absolute Burlesque
Hot on the heels of last year’s sell-out run, Sassy von Sparkle and her dancers return with a new show, guaranteed to take your breath away.
Children - Alice And The Little Prince and The Basil Brush Show
For little ones and those young at heart, two events are recommended. Lewis Carroll’s famous character meets the prince of her dreams, whilst Britain’s favourite fox is back with more funny tales, boom-boom!
Comedy - AAA Stand-up Late
A riot of a time is pretty much on the agenda here as a brand new line up take a successful format and add their own spin to things. Veritable and much loved comedians Jason Byrne, and Craig Hill also return with brand new material.
Dance and Theatre - Beat Grrrrls
The description of high voltage rhythm is bang on as the girls take you through some seriously good moves in their entertaining and fast paced act.
Events - Edinburgh Gin Safari
Get on the trail and see the New Town through gin-tinted spectacles. But please drink sensibly, it’s a longer than expected tour!
